Retirement Planning

You spent your career saving and building wealth. The question now is what comes next.

Answering that question is what we do every day. Retirement planning is not an activity you go through only once. It is an ongoing process that touches every part of your financial life: how you spend, how you invest, your tax strategy, and how you protect your assets.

Most people underestimate the complexity. The difference between a good retirement and a great one often comes down to a handful of decisions made in the five to ten years before you stop working. Getting these right can mean retiring years earlier, while getting them wrong can cost you years.

This is where we can help. Bull Oak is a fiduciary, fee-only financial advisor specializing in helping high earners plan for and achieve early retirement. We are based in San Diego and work with clients nationwide.

Why Retirement Planning Is Harder Than You Think

A lot of our clients built out an Excel spreadsheet or used an online retirement calculator before deciding to work with us. They quickly realize that retirement planning is far more complicated than it looks at first glance. Plus, the stakes were too high to get it wrong.

Retirement planning involves many variables: your savings rate, your portfolio allocation, your portfolio returns, your spending needs during retirement, your lifetime tax strategy, when to turn on Social Security, which accounts you should draw from first during retirement, Roth conversion windows, healthcare bridge strategies, and more.

Behind all of these decisions is usually one major question: Am I going to be okay?

And that is what we are here to answer. We bring all these moving parts together into one cohesive plan so you can retire with confidence. The goal is not just to retire. It is to build a plan that funds the life you actually want to live.

San Diego Financial Advisors
Our Approach to Retirement Planning

We start with a mind-mapping session. We put everything on a whiteboard: your income sources, your expenses, your goals, your risk factors, everything. And then we are able to connect the pieces. “This account is for their business.” Or, “This inherited rental property was acquired 10 years ago, and they would like to gift it to their daughter.”

We find that this approach is far more effective than the standard fact-finder questionnaire prevalent in our industry. This is a collaborative process that allows us to truly understand your financial picture and where you are trying to go.

After we complete the mind-mapping session, we build your plan in focused stages: retirement and cash flow, investments, taxes, and risk planning. Each conversation addresses a core area, keeping decisions clear and actionable.

Retirement and Cash Flow Projections

We model your income, spending, and assets year by year to answer the question: when can I stop working? The goal is to show you exactly when work becomes optional and whether your lifestyle is fully supported for the rest of your life.

We stress-test the plan against market downturns, inflation spikes, and unexpected expenses so you can see exactly where you stand and when you can retire comfortably.

Tax Strategy

Nearly every financial decision you make impacts your taxes. What you do today can shape what you owe for years. So, here at Bull Oak, we don’t think of taxes as an afterthought. We build your tax strategy into your plan from the start.

Investment Management

Your portfolio in retirement should look different than your portfolio while working. We adjust your asset allocation to balance growth with income needs, manage sequence-of-returns risk, and position your investments for tax efficiency.

Withdrawal Strategy

Which accounts do you draw from first? When do you convert? How do you minimize the tax drag on your portfolio over a 30-year retirement? These decisions compound over time and can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in difference. We optimize this for every client.

Ongoing Service

Bull Oak will continually oversee and optimize your finances. But beyond the work we do behind the scenes, we’ll also meet with you throughout the year.

Who We Work With

Most of our retirement planning clients are San Diego professionals in their 50s and 60s with investable assets of $2 million or more. Many are executives, tech professionals, or business owners with complex goals and complex compensation (RSUs, stock options, deferred comp). Some are already retired and looking for a better advisor. Others are five to ten years out and realize that the stakes are rising and the cost of making a mistake is too high. They want to work with someone they can trust to help them make the right decisions.

If you are the kind of person who has worked hard, built real wealth, and wants to fully hand off the financial complexity to someone you trust, that is exactly who we built this firm for.

Based in San Diego. Working nationwide.

While our roots are in San Diego, we work with clients across the country. California, Texas, New York, Ohio, Florida, and many others. Our planning process is fully virtual-capable, and the principles behind a great retirement plan are the same whether you’re in La Jolla or Manhattan. If our approach resonates with you, location is not a barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need to retire in San Diego

There is no single number. It depends on your lifestyle, housing situation, healthcare needs, and income sources. That said, most of our clients need between $1.5 million and $5 million in investable assets to maintain their current standard of living in retirement. We build a custom projection for every client based on their actual expenses and goals.

When should I start planning for retirement?
The earlier, the better, but the most critical planning window is 5 to 10 years before your target retirement date. That is when decisions around Roth conversions, Social Security timing, and withdrawal sequencing have the biggest impact.
What is the difference between a retirement planner and a financial advisor?
Most financial advisors offer some form of retirement planning. The difference is depth and expertise. At Bull Oak, retirement planning is central to what we do. We build detailed cash flow models, coordinate tax strategy, and manage investments, all under one roof.
Do you only work with people in San Diego?
We are based in Rancho Santa Fe, and the majority of our clients are local to San Diego. But we work with clients nationwide. If you value the kind of hands-on, detail-oriented planning we provide, location is not a barrier.
What makes Bull Oak different from other retirement planners in San Diego?
A few things. First, we only hire and train the best. Our clients are high performers, and so are our advisors. Second, we are true fiduciaries, which means that we are fee-only, with no commissions, and no product sales. Third, our services include tax prep and filing, ensuring your portfolio and tax strategies work hand-in-hand. And finally, we specialize in early retirement planning for high earners.

See if we're a good fit.
